Telepsychology: Connecting with Families and Children

Directors: Jeff Reese & Rob Sprang

Overview

The P20 Telepsychology: Connecting Families and Children Lab is co-directed by Dr. Jeff Reese, Ph.D, Associate Professor in the Department of Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology and Rob Sprang, MBA, director of Kentucky Telecare.  The broad goal of the P20 Telepsychology Research Lab is to improve the access of specialized, evidence-based psychosocial services for children and families in rural and remote areas of Appalachia Kentucky using telehealth technologies (videoconferencing, videophones, telephone, Internet). Children and families in Kentucky are vastly underserved – approximately 75% of children diagnosed with developmental, behavioral, and emotional problems are not receiving the appropriate services in their schools or communities. This problem is exacerbated in rural Appalachia where there is a shortage of treatment providers to provide these needed specialized services (Kentucky Department of Education, 2006).

There are four specific goals for the Telepsychology Lab to support a community-engaged scholarship paradigm:

  • Increase the provision of specialized mental health services for children and families in Kentucky by utilizing telehealth technologies.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and utility of telehealth technologies in rural, remote communities.
  • Promote engagement with the schools and communities in Kentucky, particularly underserved eastern Kentucky that will result in new projects to expand services.
  • Provide both research and clinical training opportunities for graduate students who are enrolled in the Counseling and School Psychology graduate programs at the University of Kentucky.
