Implementing Mastery Learning

Personalizing Differentiated Instruction to Help All Students Succeed

Personalizing instruction within group-based classrooms presents unique challenges for teachers. Mastery learning offers practical and effective strategies teachers can use to better differentiate and individualize teaching and learning within the classroom environment. IIn this engaging two-day institute, mastery learning expert Thomas Guskey and implementation expert Carmen Coleman will guide you through the essential steps to effectively deploy mastery learning strategies in modern classrooms. You will learn how to adapt these strategies to personal teaching styles, specific classroom situations, and the needs of individual students. As a result, you will be prepared to help more students learn well and gain the many positive benefits of that success.

Institute Learning Targets:

  • Understand the basic elements of mastery learning and how those elements can be adapted to elementary, middle, and high school classrooms.
  • Develop high quality formative assessments that offer essential feedback to students and teachers on learning progress.
  • Plan effective corrective and enrichment activities that personalize and differentiate learning for students.
  • Explore strategies for the successful implementation of mastery learning in performance-based and competency-based reform models.
